Who Are You?

Who are you?

One thing I’ve learned a lot about recently is myself. I’m on a journey to figure out who I truly am as a person, rather than the persona that other people see.

There are a lot of factors to this. The early years of your life play a big role in who you become as an adult. Childhood experiences, fears, achievements, all play a role in the person you become. But is it really who you are?

One thing I'm learning is that the person I portray to others doesn't always fit with the person I feel I am. This is both a good and a bad thing.

When I need to, I can separate myself from any current struggle I'm dealing with, and still portray the best version of myself. This is very helpful when I'm working. I can switch off from an issue I'm dealing with personally and still be fully present with any clients I'm seeing that day.

It can be an issue when I’m with family or friends. They only see the version of me that I show them, so it can make it hard for me to be the person I truly feel I am. There’s many reasons for this, but the big one is fear. What if they don’t like the real me? Or accept the real me? It’s difficult to break through this barrier, but pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is the only way you grow.

I imagine there's a lot of people reading this that feel a similar way. They put on a persona when they’re at work or with friends etc, in an attempt to be accepted and to feel like they fit in. But in reality, they're not being true to themselves.

It can be very draining, putting on a persona all the time just to feel like you fit in. But it doesn't have to stay this way. The more you work on yourself and your own issues, the more accurate version of yourself you can portray. I'm not going to pretend its a quick or easy process, it takes months of dedication to even start to make the shift. But the more focus you put on yourself, and becoming the true version of you, the stronger relationships you'll build around you.

Are you really the true version of yourself? Or are you hiding behind a mask in hopes that you'll fit in with other peoples expectations and perceptions?
