More than 80 out of every 100 people will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. However, 1 in 20 of those suffering from low back pain will get sciatica. Sciatica is pain that runs down the path of the sciatic nerve from the lower back into the buttock and down the leg to the foot and toes. This is caused by pressure on the lumbar spine nerve roots, which results in inflammation, pain, and, in many cases, numbness or pins and needles in the affected leg. Chiropractic care at Peak provides an alternative to pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures that takes a more holistic approach to treating low back pain and sciatica.. I'm going to share Trish's story, a 47-year-old mother and grandmother who found relief from chronic low back pain and sciatica through care with us.
Trish had experienced debilitating episodes of low back pain and sciatica down her right leg over the past five years. Her most recent incident occurred when she took her grandson to a trampoline park, leaving her barely able to walk upright, and struggling to sleep. Despite trying a variety of treatments, including physical therapy, Trish received only short relief through three significant flare ups. Desperate for a solution, she decided to try chiropractic care because she had excellent outcomes with it over 20 years ago.
In Chapter 1 of Trish's care, a personalised treatment plan was developed that included regular chiropractic adjustments to correct spinal misalignments, restore proper nervous system function, and activate inhibited muscles to provide proper joint stability and movement. Every session was unique in terms of treatment and adjustments administered because the approach was adapted based on how her body was changing and what it was indicating on the day.
Trish's first chapter included 36 sessions, which she attended three times per week. A considerable improvement in her pain and symptoms was apparent after two to three weeks. She also reported improved general mobility and was able to help decorate the house she and her husband moved into. While receiving treatment, she took it upon herself to perform regular stretching and basic functional exercises to help her progress and recovery.
Trish had transformed drastically by the end of her two-month treatment plan. Her back pain has significantly improved, and her sciatica symptoms are no longer affecting her allowing participation in activities she had previously avoided. Trish's quality of life is now substantially better, and she feels more energetic and productive. She has signed up for regular exercise classes to continue increasing her fitness and prevent recurrence of the severe back pain and sciatica she had experienced.
After making significant changes to her neurological patterns in Chapter 1, which focused on joint function and muscle activation, Trish is now moving on to Chapter 2. At each weekly session she will alternate between seeing a clinician and one of our myofascial therapists, who will lengthen specific muscles and address fascial restrictions as needed, particularly to improve her range of motion in her upper body. She will continue modifying her lifestyle with the goal of dropping 6kg, increasing walking distances, particularly uphill, and, eventually, spend a pain-free day with her grandson at Alton Towers, her ultimate goal.
Trish's story demonstrates the effectiveness of care at Peak for her chronic back pain and sciatica. Her path from severe pain to restored function and alleviated pain exemplifies Peak's comprehensive approach to addressing the fundamental cause of the problem, rather than just focusing on the affected region or simply masking the symptoms with medication. We provide an alternative solution, focusing on natural healing and prevention for people seeking long-term relief from musculoskeletal ailments.
