When was the last time you committed 3-5 years to one thing/area or goal?
Some people can list many times for a few others I'm sure they never have.
Those times you have asked yourself “Am I better off in the long run for committing X years to this one thing?”
I hope for all our sakes the answer is yes.
I believe it is very difficult to be in a worse situation than before after working consistently in one area for 3-5 years.
Here is the answer to why most people don’t achieve their goals or dreams, because we greatly underestimated the time and effort it requires to achieve them.
Take everyone's favorite goal, weight loss.
A quick google search will say it takes 4-6 weeks to lose 1 stone of bodyweight. Through my own experiences of speaking to a hundred people every single week over the last few years, very few actually achieve the goal of losing 1 stone at all, let alone in the 4-6 weeks time frame.
Then even fewer keep the weight off over the next year. In fact there's tons of data that shows in 5 or 10 years time people actually weigh more than before despite losing weight initially.
Why? I believe it's because of their expectations of the time frame.
With a 4-6 week time frame there are 2 scenarios I see happening.
Scenario 1- Person A loses 1 stone in the 6 weeks achieving their goal, they now aim to keep it off but return to some of their old bad habits. We know it takes a minimum of 66 days to change a habit so they become one of the 90% who gain the weight back, plus interest.
Scenario 2- Person A loses 2 pounds in the first 4 weeks, is discouraged because google said they should have lost 5 pounds by now and stop because the diet work and its pointless.
How would the ending of those stories differ if instead of having 4-6 weeks in mind Person A had 3 years as their time frame and they decided for the first 3 months out of the next 36 they focus on weight loss.
Then depending on their success they decided to spend another 3 months on weight loss again taking the total time 6 out of 36 months. Then so on and so on.
The way I see it, It’s really bloody difficult to make no progress at all if I consistently work at something for 3 years.
Imagine what you could achieve if you spent 1 hour per week on 1 specific goal for the next 3 years.
That's 156 hours or 6.5 days working towards 1 specific goal.
I hope we can all agree that if we spent 156 hours on any one thing we would be significantly better off at the end of it.
Considering its estimate the average UK adult spends 2 hours 36 minutes watching TV everyday and over 4 hours if you include streaming content as well.
That's 2730 hours of watching TV over 3 years, and 4368 hours if you include streaming content.
Imagine how healthier, happier, more successful and fulfilled we would all be if just 20% of that time was invested more wisely.
