Let’s talk about the big one, Sciatica.
For many people sciatica can be the worst thing that has ever happened to them. 10/10 pain in the lower back, buttocks and leg/s accompanied with tingling, pins and needles, muscle cramps you name it.
It has the ability to cut a strong independent man off at the knees and leave him struggling to walk across a landing in time to urinate. In this particular example, that is exactly what happened.
You're a super fit and healthy 50 year old man, working full time in a very physically demanding job, running half marathons in the week for fun. Completing DIY projects, keeping the garden pristine, washing the cars you name it.
You’re the guy everyone refers to as the example of health and fitness within your family and friendship circles.
Within days it's gone. You’re lying flat on your back on the bedroom floor, because the beds are too soft, staring at the ceiling. You need a wee but it takes you 10 minutes to even stand up because the pains are so bad. It takes another 10 minutes to hobble across the landing to the bathroom and even attempt sitting down on the toilet.
6 months goes by, you have been to work once since it started. Which is even more of a concern because you’re a one man band business owner, which means you’ve not earnt a penny.
The NHS have given you all the painkillers and anti-inflammatories in the cabinet and they aren't helping. It’s excruciatingly painful to even attempt the exercises and stretches they have given, nevertheless, you’ve done them 3 times a day and still no change.
To top it all off, the wife is talking about going private for a consultation and MRI, at the cost of £900, so you can see if surgery is even an option.
Before you book that, to see if anything can be done conservatively, without the need for surgery, you go to see a Chiropractor.
After the most in-depth assessment so far, by some way may I add, they are able to tell you exactly what is causing your sciatica, why it's there and most importantly how to resolve it. The plan includes specifics, the time frame, the amount of sessions and the cost all up front at the beginning.
As one last attempt you decide to start, if it doesn't work then at least I tried everything before surgery.
He starts on the 22nd of March, by the 30th April he’s worked a 4 day week.
Over the course of care he returns to work full time, walking miles on holiday, starting back running and playing on the floor with his newborn Grandson. No surgery, no injections, no painkillers or anti-inflammatories.
He’s able to return to the same, if not better, quality of life he had before.
