My Son's Back Pain Journey At Team Peak- A Parents Perspective

My eldest son, Aiden, who is 15 years old, has been trampolining since he was eight years old and has competed at the national level for much of that time. He has recently qualified for the British and English Championships, which will be held in the autumn. Aiden began receiving adjustments over a year ago to address muscle imbalances that had been causing him low and mid-back pain, lower leg pain, and impeding his performance and progress.

Muscle imbalance occurs when opposing muscles give unequal support to a joint or when muscles contribute differently on the left and right sides of the body. An unsupported joint can generate abnormal motion, which can lead to joint cartilage wear, tendon stress/damage, muscle tears, joint instability, and joints that click or move beyond their usual range, contributing to inflammation, pain, and degeneration. In cases where the primary muscles aren't functioning correctly, the brain instructs nearby muscles to take over in order to restore adequate joint support and movement. Compensatory muscle patterns can produce additional pain or injury and divert attention from the original cause; in other words, they introduce an additional layer of complexity to the issue. In Aiden's scenario, it was clear that as he pushed off the trampoline, his legs and feet did different things, and the pain he felt in his body confirmed there was a problem.

Following a comprehensive examination, we observed that Aiden's muscles around his low back, pelvis, and leg were not activating, particularly on his right side. In his first chapter of care, he received manual therapy twice a week, which included spine and joint adjustments and mobilisations.

After 6-8 weeks, Aiden felt significant improvements in his function, a more balanced use of his body, and a substantial reduction of pain in his legs and back. He has achieved notable achievements in his current competition season and has felt more adept in his regular training and skill development. Though he sustained some minor injuries along the way, he continued in care to ensure that his body was healing and that he did not develop any unhealthy habits, particularly because his body was attempting to avoid painful movements. His progress is continually evaluated through regular muscle testing during his sessions, and his treatments are tailored to what his body reveals at each visit.

As Aiden's parent, watching him thrive and develop with little difficulty is really fulfilling. He claims to feel strong and balanced, which encouraged him to push himself in trampolining and discover what he is truly capable of in the sport that he competes in at the national level.

We delivered over £100,000 in free chiropractic care for children to our members, including £26,000 this year! Just because they are young does not mean that their neurological movement patterns have not been influenced; every parent knows how many bumps, stumbles, and falls they have endured.  Even a challenging delivery experience can influence their patterning. We can assess and treat your child from infancy to adolescence, and all ages in between, whether they are just learning to walk or a high-level athlete. Schedule their own Discovery Visit or Initial Consultation with one of our skilled clinicians who understands the particular needs of developing children to see whether they are reaching age-related milestones or have developed muscular imbalances that we can treat as they grow, just like we are doing with Aiden.
