Neck pain is a common issue that affects approximately 30-50% of the adult population in the UK at some point each year. It frequently disrupts daily activities and is a common cause of absenteeism and reduced performance in the workplace, and a lower quality of life. This is especially true for the substantial portion of people who acquire chronic symptoms, with pain extending months or even years. In this case study, I will share how chiropractic care helped an individual regain their health and well-being, and in their words their 'life', after struggling from chronic neck pain.
N, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a photographer in their forties who began experiencing significant neck pain about six years ago. The pain, which they described as 'horrendous', traveled from their neck down the back of their shoulder and into their arm, accompanied by tingling and pins and needles, down into their fingers. It was impacting their work performance, overall functioning, sleep, drive, and socializing. The aforementioned were also affected by unusually high doses of pain medicine prescribed to them, which also had adverse effects on their digestion and mood. Despite meeting with more than one consultant in the healthcare system, N's condition persisted, with only surgery and pain management offered as solutions. This is when N came to Peak looking for a different solution.
N visited our chiropractic clinic in search of relief and an alternative to surgery. During the initial consultation, I performed a thorough evaluation and discovered that their neck pain was most likely caused by bad posture, mainly around their shoulders and neck, which resulted in multiple muscular inhibitions in those areas. They had a somewhat forward head posture, with their head tilted and shifted to one side, which contributed to their discomfort, muscular inhibitions, and restricted range of motion.
N's personalized plan included spinal adjustments three times per week in Chapter 1 of their care to correct misalignments and restore proper cervical spine alignment. The adjustments had the purpose to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility. Within the first 2-3 weeks, N saw a considerable reduction in pain around their neck and shoulder, which they deemed an encouraging sign considering that their pain medications were also being reduced. Their range of motion was also improving, and they felt more comfortable and capable at work and in everyday activities.
At the end of Chapter 1, N's discomfort had nearly totally subsided, and they reported feeling more energized and focused at work, as well as having hired a new team, allowing them to take a break from working at such high intensity. Their consultant has also discharged them, indicating that surgery was no longer necessary. With the addition of new team members, they have recently begun attending the gym in an effort to improve their health even further.
To continue their progress, N has begun Chapter 2 of care. Our myofascial team will now provide soft tissue treatment in addition to further adjustments. This, in addition to maintaining a regular exercise routine and improving their posture, can help in preventing the return of their neck pain.
N's story highlights some of the beneficial outcomes that can occur with chiropractic treatment for neck pain. Their symptoms and pain were reduced and their quality of life was enhanced through a mix of spinal adjustments, lifestyle modifications, strengthening exercises, and myofascial therapy.
