In January most people like to reflect on the year they've had, and make some resolutions for themselves in the new year. Lots of people do this every year, but most people set themselves targets that are too big to reach in one go, so they often end up giving up after a month or two. I'm going to give you 5 new habits for you to implement this year that will help improve your lifestyle.
1) Make your bed.
This seems like an obvious one, and most of you already do it, but making your bed in the morning is the perfect way to start your day. It is a simple task that takes less than a minute to do, but gives you that small sense of accomplishment to set you up for the rest of the day. It also helps encourage you to keep the rest of your room clean and tidy, and is much nicer to climb into after a long day. The little things matter, so make them count.
2) Drink more water.
Again, another obvious one, but many people don't drink as much water as they should each day. Aside from keeping you hydrated, water has many other benefits to your health. It can help reduce muscle fatigue whilst exercising, replacing the fluids lost through sweat. It helps keep your skin looking healthy, as dehydration can make your skin look more dry and wrinkled. It is also really important for normal kidney and bowel function, reducing your risk of developing kidney stones or constipation.
3) Exercise more.
Millions of people join a gym at the start of January, but after a few months or even weeks, the number of people still going is similar to what it was before the new years rush. But exercising more doesn't mean you have to spend £20+ per month for a gym membership. There are plenty of ways you can exercise at home or make some small changes in your lifestyle to be more active. If you live in an apartment or work in an office, take the stairs instead of the lift. If you live close to school or work, walk or cycle a few times a week. Go for a short walk each day, even 10 minutes is enough to have a positive impact on your physical and mental well being.
All three of these things are small, free changes you can make in your life that will have a surprisingly big impact on your life. They are also things that require minimal effort, so should be easy to stick to not just throughout January, but also the rest of the year as well. They’re also things that you can do as a family, making it easier to stick to them.
